Gardeners with a passion for plants will find there is a way to enjoy the benefits of hydroponic grow lights without having to make a huge investment. Special LED lights provide hobbyists with the energy source they need for in-home growing without the need for all the equipment that goes along with a standard hydroponic set up.
How They Work
Hydroponic grow lights that are able to stand alone without the need for fans, ballasts or additional heat sinks provide power for growing without extra requirements. These bulbs are designed to screw into any socketed lamp and when they are properly set up they provide plants the energy required to complete the process of photosynthesis.
All gardeners need to do to take advantage of these lights is establish an indoor growing area that’s large enough to accommodate their plants. Hydroponic grow lights should be hung above the plant canopy to provide a steady stream of energy that simulates natural sunlight. How far above the canopy the light will need to go will depend on the specific plant light requirements and the capacity of the bulbs purchased.
Once the setup is established, standalone hydroponic grow lights will provide the energy source needed for photosynthesis in much the same way the sun does. Gardeners will still need to provide water, nutrient-rich soil and basic care. Lights should only be used as recommended for the plant type and gardeners must remember to turn them off to simulate nighttime conditions inside their homes.
Why LED?
LED hydroponic grow lights are an excellent choice for a number of reasons. These lights provide such benefits as:
- Affordable purchase prices – Dual spectrum hydroponic grow lights that promote both vegetative and flowering stages in plant growth cost less than $70 generally. That means unlike more complex hydroponic systems, these bulbs are within financial reach of most hobbyists.
- Affordable operating costs – LED hydroponic grow lights don’t draw a lot of energy. That means gardeners don’t have to expect huge electric bills when these lights are in operation. What’s more, these lights last a long time and provide a reliable source of energy for plant growth.
- Results – Hydroponic grow lights produce the results hobbyists are after. These lights are suitable for vegetable, houseplant and succulent gardening. In addition, many gardeners have reported great results with hard-to-grow orchids, too.
Hydroponic grow lights give gardeners an edge without a lot of expense. It is possible to see results without paying a fortune to obtain them. We recommend this LED grow light for almost all of your seedling, sprouting, herb growing and basic house plant care: The Best LED Grow Light.

Good article. I would add that LED lights also give off much less heat than HPS bulbs, so you save even more on electricity costs because you don’t need to power any cooling equipment. Moreover, you don’t even need to buy cooling equipment in the first place.

I generally recommend LED grow lights to everyone these days, too. Costs have come down so much, that you can actually find LEDs that cost less than their HID equivalents. And of course the operating costs are much lower. It has become a no-brainer, really.
